At home, John had recently adopted 2 kittens from the humane society. From the wolves of Minnesota to the Galapagos tortoises, John had a fascination with learning about animals, and strived to make the world a better place for them all. This reflected his desire to learn and soak up knowledge in every aspect of his life. He frequently would get 100% on exams (we’ve always known he was the smartest of the bunch) yet would still do the extra credit if offered. He was one of the most hard-working people this world has seen, never settling for anything less than his best. John was profoundly loyal to those he cared about, the quiet depth with which he loved was remarkable. He exuded a quiet leadership – showing up before he needed to be there, staying late, helping out behind the scenes and being a role model for those around him. That was John for you, always an understated kind of guy, never one to brag or show off. If we had been given the chance to ask John what he would want said about himself, he would have given his classic shoulder shrug, “I dunno” answer. He moved back to SD after graduating and worked for the city of Sioux Falls as an Operator at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. He then attended Carthage, graduating in December 2018 with degrees in Environment Science and Geography and Earth Science. He attended Anne Sullivan, Whittier and Washington High School. Larsen was born in Sioux Falls to Karen Heiling and David Larsen.

He will be forever missed, forever loved. Charlie's enthusiasm for life and the love he had for everyone around him, including Fluffy, will live on. His parents count themselves very lucky to have had Charlie to dinner two or three times a week, including a Sunday dinner ritual, during the last few years. He loved the family poker games, which he always won. He loved sports, politics, music, working out and great food, especially his 'Momma's'. Charlie was a snappy dresser with a keen, eclectic sense of style. After graduation Charlie went into investment banking. His favorite thing to do was spend time with family and many friends from high school and Carthage College, where he was President of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. During his time living in Chicago, he got to see the Cubs win the World Series. Born in Wisconsin, Charlie was an avid Packers and Bucks fan. Survived by parents Mike and Susan Hilt and siblings Calvin and Sawyer, Charlie was the beloved grandson of Robert and Elaine Hilt and Fred and Carol Stark, as well as uncles John, Ken, Geoff and Steve, and aunts, Genny, Stephanie, Becky and Tara, and cousins Clay (deceased), Ted and Allie, Amanda, Jacquie, Johnny, and Layla.
